Project Engineer
Leighs Construction is seeking an experienced Project Engineer with structural engineering expertise to join our dynamic construction team.
About the Project:
This role will be based on the Canterbury Museum Redevelopment, a landmark project transforming one of Christchurch’s most significant heritage and cultural sites. The redevelopment combines complex new construction with careful restoration of heritage buildings, including extensive basement works, seismic strengthening, and integration of new exhibition and public spaces. This once-in-a-generation project reflects Leighs’ commitment to building with Pride, Passion, and Excellence, and offers the opportunity to be involved in technically challenging and highly visible work.
About the Role:
We're looking for a practically-minded engineer with a minimum of 3-5 years of consultant experience who wants to transition into the exciting world of construction. You'll work on major projects, providing technical expertise while being part of a collaborative site-based team.
What You'll Do:
- Lead engineering coordination on complex construction projects
- Review structural designs, shop drawings, and temporary works
- Contribute to tender preparation and construction methodologies
- Liaise with consultants, architects, and internal project teams
- Identify and resolve constructability issues before they become problems
- Support project sequencing and programming decisions
- Mentor junior engineers and interns
What We're Looking For:
- 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or equivalent.
- 3-5 years structural engineering experience with a reputable consultancy or commercial constructor
- Strong technical foundation with practical problem-solving approach
- Interest in construction and site-based work rather than purely technical calculations
- Excellent communication skills and team-oriented personality
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse project teams
- Preference for hands-on involvement over desk-based design work
What We Offer:
- Competitive salary that exceeds consultant rates
- Opportunity to work on prestigious, complex projects
- Site-based role with variety and team collaboration
- Clear career progression pathways
- Supportive team environment
- Professional development opportunities
- Flexible working arrangements
Ideal Candidate:
You're an engineer who enjoys the technical aspects of structural design but wants more practical application and team interaction. You're interested in how buildings actually get built and want to be part of making that happen, rather than just doing calculations in isolation.
This role suits someone who has gained solid consultant experience but is looking for a more dynamic, collaborative environment with better compensation and career prospects in construction.
