Senior Quantity Surveyor

Leighs Construction is a New Zealand-owned and operated company that has been providing high-quality outcomes for our clients, staff, and communities for over 30 years, boasting an inclusive company culture and an iconic project portfolio throughout NZ, the wider Pacific, and the Antarctic. We plan on leaving a lasting legacy of innovative, safe structures for future generations to come.

We are looking for a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our high-performing commercial team, based in Christchurch.

This is a rare opportunity to play a key role in one of New Zealand's most significant and technically demanding construction projects currently in delivery. The wider programme is being delivered under a Public Private Partnership (PPP), a collaborative model bringing together leading construction, engineering, and service delivery organisations to deliver infrastructure that will serve New Zealand for generations.

Initially office-based in Christchurch, the role will transition to a site-based position in Templeton from the final quarter of this year, placing you at the heart of the action as the project moves into its critical delivery phase. You will also form part of our wider national commercial team, giving you visibility across Leighs' broader portfolio.

The facility itself is a landmark piece of national infrastructure, designed for continuous 24/7 operation, incorporating highly controlled environments, complex and integrated building systems, and stringent long-term asset performance requirements. It is the kind of project that defines careers.

As a Senior Quantity Surveyor you will be responsible for:

  • Manage project documentation, prepare financial reports (progress claims, final accounts, labour analysis), and oversee procurement, cash flow, and project changes.
  • Establish procurement plans, negotiate with subcontractors and suppliers, manage subcontractor payments, and track contract instructions and charges.
  • Develop and manage project budgets, ensure compliance with contract requirements, monitor financial performance, and approve project expenditure invoices.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to intermediate and junior quantity surveyors while upholding Leighs’ leadership values and competency framework.

Skills and experience required:

  • Minimum 10 + years relevant industry experience in quantity surveying
  • Recognised and relevant professional QS qualification
  • Skill in collaborating effectively with others to achieve common goals and maintain a positive team environment.
  • Expertise in predicting future expenses and income using financial tools for informed decision-making.
  • Knowledge of applying business principles, including market analysis, financial understanding, and risk management, to drive organisational success.

What We Offer:

  • A salary that reflects your expertise
  • Work that actually matters, on a project that will shape New Zealand's future
  • We want you thriving, not just surviving, real work/life balance and genuine investment in your growth
